Trip North: Friday

First thing in the morning we went to the docks where so many millions of people emigrated. About 50,000 or 60,000 of the nine million immigrants were members of the church. There is a statue at the docks dedicated to the families who left Europe to start new lives in America. As we stood at the memorial a few people shared stories of their ancestors who had left from the docks we were standing on. As a group we sang “Come, Come Ye Saints.” It was humbling to think of those people sacrificing so much.

Friday afternoon took a much more lighthearted tone. We went to Chatsworth, a large country manner that was used as Pemberley, home of Mr. Darcy, in the filming of the most recent “Pride and Prejudice.” It was, as Allie says, a chance to see how the other half lives.
